Which Age of Steam Map Should You Play First?

Play Rust Belt first: no special rules, two-thirds of all completed games on this site, and every strategy guide assumes it.

Your second map is a matter of taste: Scotland for short, tight 2-player duels; Switzerland or Osaka for rule twists.
Fourteen maps means one more decision before your first game. The short answer: there is nothing to decide. Play Rust Belt first.
Why Rust Belt
- No special rules. Every other map adds its own twist. Learning the skeleton of the game on the vanilla board is faster.
- It is the original board. The base game is set here, and most Age of Steam strategy writing anywhere assumes this map — including this site's strategy guide.
- It has the most data. 167 of 246 completed games here are Rust Belt. It is the baseline of our measured map comparison, so your score has something to be compared against.
- Forgiving city density. Around Chicago and St. Louis there are several early delivery candidates, so a failed turn-1 plan can still be repaired on turn 2.
Five minutes before you start
If the rules are new, skim the 10-step turn order and the 7 actions on How to Play — that is enough. Your first game shows short guide cards at each phase telling you what is being decided. The median completed game takes 17 minutes.
After that, it is taste
- Scotland · for short, tense duels. Two players only, 6.1 turns on average — the quickest board.
- Switzerland · for a high-scoring engine game, averaging 107.7 VP.
- Osaka · for rule twists. A cramped board with unusual constraints — a completely different puzzle from Rust Belt.
- Ireland, Korea, Scandinavia · three official maps added in August 2026. Few records yet — frontier territory.
All figures in this article are measured from completed games on this site (246 completed games through August 2026, operator accounts excluded). They describe play on this implementation, not tournament play with the physical game.
